Tirwa Family Palace Anand Bhawan was established in 1929. The architecture of the Palace is Art deco, a beautiful mix of old & new. In early times it boasted of beautiful Murano Chandeliers which were destroyed as the palace was locked for over 20 years. The present Raja of Tirwa, Raja Digvijay Narain Singh is instrumental in bringing the Palace to its old glory by restoring it beautifully.
The Royal Family of Tirwa traces its ancestry from Vyaghra Rao in 596 AD. During the wars between Baghelkhand, Kannauj and Magadha Emperor Isanvarman brought Vyaghra Rao with him in 560 AD and settled him near Kannauj which was then ruled by Raja Jaychandra. Kannauj became independent in 1308 AD. The title of Raja was given to the eldest son of Pratap Singh, Samar Singh by the to Emperor with a Mansab of 3000 in 1697 AD and it was then the Tirwa Raj was finally established.
Tirwa after 1750 AD - The 30th generation of the family now well established in Tirwa was ruled by Raja Anirudha Singh who died at the age of 73 leaving behind his heir Raja Jaswant Singh who was a great scholar and the famous compilation of books ‘Shringar Shiromani' was written by him. He also laid the foundation of the vast Shri Annapurna Deviji temple and the Panch Mandirs. Since he died childless his younger brother Pitam Singh became the Raja and completed all the works started by his late brother. One of the younger brothers Laik Singh was also given the title of Raja and established the State of Thathia near 'Tirwa. His son Raja Chhatrasal Singh opposed the British in 1805 AD and his grandson Raja Pohkar Singh once again fought the British in 1857 with the result Thathia was taken over by the British. Meanwhile in Tirwa Raja Jaswant Singh had passed away and his son Jagat Singh became the Raja. Raja Jagat Singh had extremely good relations with the British and managed to manoeuvre the amalgamation of Thathia State into
his domains. Being childless he adopted his great grand nephew Udit Narayan Singh and declared him as his heir.
Upon the death of Raja Jagat Singh, his adopted son Udit Narayan Singh became the Raja who was only 2 years old and the State went into the Court of Wards' to be released only when the Raja gained majority. He passed away in 1907 leaving behind his only son and heir Raja Durga Narayan Singh who was only 11 years old and the State went into the
'Court of Wards' for the second time once again to be released in 1914 during the IInd. World War. Raja Durga Narayan Singh built and started an Intermediate College in Tirwa in 1923 in memory of his late wife and pledged hundreds of acres of farm land to the college. The main building of the college is far bigger and more magnificent than his palace. He kept himself very busy with numerous social, cultural and political activities besides looking after the affairs of the State. He was elected President of the District Board. During his time at the district board, he also
constructed a bridge over the Isan river for ease of transportation to Tirwa. People still use the bridge to enter and exit Tirwa. He was awarded the rank of Major in the Indian Army and was also given the personal title of Raja Bahadur by Lord Linlithgow. He became a Minister for Local Self Government in the Ist. Interim Govt, of Uttar Pradesh in 1937.
Major Raja Bahadur Durga Narayan Singh passed away in 1944 leaving behind his legacy to his elder son Raja Sharda Narayan Singh. Raja Sharda Narayan Singh founded a Post Graduate College in 1958 in the memory of his late father at Fatehgarh in Farrukhabad District. He passed away in 1996 leaving behind his wife and & children. His elder son Digvijay Narain Singh is the present Raja who looks after the 2 colleges and the ancestral property.
